Complementary Hardware > LOUPS™

Developed for Harken by Aramiri Rigging in conjunction with Yale Cordage, LOUPS™ offer a variety of ready-made soft attachment rigging solutions for racing and cruising yachts.

LOUPS replace stainless steel shackles at a fraction of the weight and cost. They are constructed using multiple coils of tough Dyneema^® covered with Spectra^®, one of the most durable materials made. Yale's proprietary annealing process ensures that loads are equal on all parts in the LOUPS and also increases the efficiency of the Dyneema^®.

The first LOUPS were tested aboard Team Adventure in The Race where they replaced the boat's shackles and attachment points for blocks, head-sails and furlers. Thirty LOUPS resulted in a weight savings of more than 200 pounds (91 kg).

Colored tracers on the LOUPS cover indicate the number of Dyneema^® coils, hence the LOUPS strength. In addition, the colored tracers serve as wear indicators; if the tracers break down LOUPS must be replaced.

Most LOUP configurations can be made by taking the block apart. If the block can't be opened, use dogbones to fasten LOUPS. LOUPS are perfect for Harken straphead blocks.

When fitting hardware, choose the LOUP that exactly matches the attachment method shown in the chart. Custom length LOUPS are also available. If you have questions, please contact Harken.

Line diameter on the sheave will be limited. Do not use the maximum.
