Furling Systems > Carbon Reefing & Furling Systems

We offer carbon furling systems with carbon parts in the drum and torque tubes, and all carbon foils for the ultimate furling. These stunning units will not only increase your boat's performance, but also add to its beauty.

Tom and John Omohundro of Solution, Inc. teamed up with Harken design and engineering to develop these systems. The result was lightweight, strong and reliable carbon furling. Prototypes of these units were aboard Ellen MacArthur's Open 60 KingfisherIn the Vendee Globe Challenge, Steve Fossett's PlayStation and several Wally yachts.

Carbon furlers weigh half as much as conventional aluminum furlers — a huge benefit because less weight high and forward not only reduces pitching and heeling, but the amount of lead needed in the keel. Compared to aluminum, a carbon fiber furler will save you from 25 Ibs (11 kg) to 200 Ibs (90 kg) depending on the size of the unit.

Our Carbon Furlers have a smooth elegant finish and are UV resistant. They are built of standard modulus carbon fiber, the same material used in most carbon masts (T300 or equivalent). The fiber is laid in the direction of the load, with strength optimized for weight. We use high-strength Spectra® cord for tack and head attachments. This "soft" attachment line replaces heavy, reinforced lugs and shackles.

Unit2/2.5C

The Unit 2/2.5C features double-groove foils built to handle high torsional reef loads. Head and tack are fixed in line with foil grooves. The Spectra® line attachment eliminates heavy lugs and shackles.

The furling drum covers the existing turnbuckle. The integral toggle accepts a turnbuckle with marine eye for 5/8" (15.9 mm) pin diameter or 3/4" (19 mm) pin diameter—similar to the Navtec® C560 for rod. In most cases the forestay does not need to be cut. No additional toggles are required.

Unit 3C, 3.25C, 3.5C, 4C and 4.5C

Units 3C through 4.5C feature carbon in the torque tube and all carbon foils. Single groove foils are made of filament-wound carbon to maximize torsional resistance. The independent aluminum halyard, head and tack swivels feature "soft attachment" spectra line and let the sail center furl before the head and tack for improved sail shape. Built-in turnbuckles make installation and mast tuning easy.

When ordering, you must schedule installation with factory-trained installers. Please specify rod size, clevis pin and headstay length. Foil kits include extra foil and connector. Prices do not include installation. Call for availability.
