Winches > Pedestals & Accessories

Pedestal-drive winch systems are favored for applications demanding speed and power. One or more crew can crank from a powerful standing position.

Pedestal systems are customized to meet the specific needs of each boat. The components shown are the building blocks used to assemble the correct system. The systems shown below are typical of those in use today. The process of designing a proper pedestal system for a boat is complicated and Harken should be involved early in the design process.

Our winch specialists are capable of providing proper specifications and CAD drawings of pedestal drive systems for boats of any size.

Belt Drive Pedestals

Harken belt drive pedestals are available molded in either carbon fiber/epoxy or Kevlar®/S-Glass/epoxy construction depending on rating rules. Drive components are fabricated of Hardkote-anodized aluminum and 17-4 PH stainless steel. Roller bearings and belt sprockets made of high-performance engineering thermoplastic and Kevlar®- reinforced drive belts ensure the lowest possible weight.

Belt drive pedestals are custom made by Harken and are offered in various heights to match every specification. Handles are offered in either single- or double-grip configurations.

In addition to the standard below-deck drives, belt drive pedestals can be supplied in "mid-drive" form. These pedestals not only offer a significant weight savings, but are also useful in building a removable pedestal. To open up cockpit space for long-distance racing or cruising, these systems can be removed in just a few minutes and the winches converted to top action.

Shaft Drive Pedestals

Harken shaft drive pedestals are made of a high-strength aluminum alloy that is Hardkote anodized for a durable finish. Gears and bearings are 17-4 PH stainless steel.

Shaft drive pedestals offer great flexibility because the input and output drive shafts do not have to be parallel and there may be as many as four output shafts.

Shaft drive pedestals arc available in two standard heights. Other heights are offered on a custom basis. They are also available with either fixed or rotating heads. Rotating heads can be locked in four positions to allow the grinder to face in a variety of directions. Both single- and double-grip handles are available.
  • The unique twisted drive pedestal, only by Harken, won the title of world's best sailing product at the Marine Equipment Trade Show (M.E. T.S.) in Holland in 1998. This pedestal eliminates the weight of the 90° gearbox when grinder faces fore and aft.
